River Road (Rt 32) Over The Pennsylvania Canal At Rabbit Run
Rabbit Run is a tributary of the Delaware River contained wholly within Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Rabbit Run Canal Bridge crosses over the Delaware Division of the Pennsylvania Canal (a national historic landmark that is also a Pennsylvania state park).
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) hired us to complete an inspection of the single-span, open-grate, steel-deck and I-beam bridge. Unfortunately, we found that the structure was in poor condition. The result? PennDOT decided to replace the structure. To minimize construction and future maintenance costs as well as provide the required vertical clearance for the Pennsylvania Canal, we designed a single span adjacent box beam bridge.
To comply with Section 106 of the Advisory Council on Historical Preservation finding of no adverse effect to the landmark, we ensured that the project maintained the tow path trail in a designated and protected area during construction so that this area of the state park would remain open during construction.
