Christchurch Bridge, Reading
Christchurch Bridge, originally known as the Reading Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, is a popular crossing over the River Thames at Reading. It was created in an effort to enhance pedestrian mobility while creating a more efficient, safe, and efficient way of crossing the river.
This project forms one part of a wider strategy and long-term vision for the continuing regeneration of Reading Town Centre. It is one of a number of projects funded through the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, creating a new transport link and facilitating future development. The 123 metre-long, cable-stayed bridge has a river span of almost 70 metres—complete with a narrow deck and single mast, creating an elegant aesthetic. Working with Urbis, we developed the lighting scheme for the bridge. All cabling is hidden from view but remains accessible for maintenance. The mast, bench and cable lights have the ability to change colour, adding to the bridge’s appeal at night.
The bridge brings the community a new connection and link to the centre of Reading on the south bank with the former village, Caversham on the north bank—creating easier journeys to and from the town.
