Baudette – Rainy River International Bridge Replacement
The replacement Baudette–Rainy River International Bridge, serves the needs of two countries, two transportation agencies, and two cities. The complex planning and design process involved the coordination of more than 90 stakeholders to address a variety of requirements.
Leading the preliminary design, bridge type study, construction delivery method, permitting, we partnered in the final design for the replacement of the Baudette–Rainy River International Bridge. As a jointly owned bridge, decisions were made cooperatively to integrate the requirements of two countries into a single, cohesive process. This process meshed environmental studies on both sides of the border and addressed the permitting requirements, design criteria, construction planning, agency involvement, historical issues, border security concerns, and public participation processes.
Now complete, the new bridge is a 1,350-foot-long, 48.2-foot-wide, 5-span haunched continuous steel girder structure located immediately upstream of the existing bridge. The structure provides two travel lanes and a pedestrian/bicyclist facility.
