Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

Updating a centuries-old facility

Strengthening the nation’s readiness and supporting the PNSY workforce as they maintain and modernize the Navy’s critical vessels.

With the Navy’s four aging shipyards falling behind modern times and into disrepair, something needed to be done. The solution? A $20 billion Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) to modernize and restore the facilities to meet the needs of our fleet.

Our team was awarded a task order for the planning and design of a new multi-mission dry dock facility at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery, Maine. The project represents a key task under our $60 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract for multi-discipline waterfront architect-engineering services for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Mid-Atlantic Region.

Our work for this shipyard, built in 1800, includes comprehensive preliminary design services to enhance the shipyard’s capabilities to support the naval war fighter. One area of focus is dry docks—unique structures that allow vessels to be safely and efficiently docked in a dry working environment so that necessary overhaul, maintenance, or repairs can commence.

Once the new dry dock facility is complete, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will be modernized and prepared to handle the Navy’s future needs.

As a result of our successful accomplishments under this and other task orders, Stantec was awarded a second IDIQ for the Navy.
