Beauport Container Terminal (Laurentia)
After the Quebec Port Authority announced its intention to construct a new container terminal at the Port of Quebec, we were retained to develop a feasibility study and the preliminary design of the proposed project—dubbed Laurentia and located at Beaufort Bay.
The project will be completed in two phases: Phase 1 will include a single berth terminal able to accommodate 13,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels, while Phase 2 will entail the construction of a second berth and all associated facilities. It’s expected that 85% of the terminal’s throughput will be handled by rail.
Serving as sub-consultant, we teamed with TBA of Delft, Holland, to plan and simulate various terminal operating configurations. Once a preferred plan was selected, our team completed preliminary engineering, capital expenditure and operational expenditure services, project schedules, risk assessments, and visualizations. The project design included the supporting infrastructure, power and lighting, two buildings, parking, and transportation assets including an off-terminal rail yard and new road access connections and overpasses.
Once completed, this port will be able to handle large container ships up to 14,000 TEUs and will have direct links to inland markets via long trains of up to 12,000 feet (3,658 metres), improving shipping economics for Canadian importers and exporters.
