Picayune Watershed Water Quality Feasibility Study
Historical water flows had declined in Collier-Seminole State Park, the Outstanding Florida Waters of the Rookery Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Cape Romano Ten Thousand Islands Aquatic Preserve. As a result, water quality in the area was also in need of improvement.
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) engaged our team to participate in a sub-regional water quality study. We first compiled and analyzed historic water quality data collected throughout the region and reviewed dozens of water quality improvement technologies relevant to South Florida. We also identified nutrient and sediment hotspots, quantified expected nutrient loads, and made initial recommendations on potentially feasible technologies for implementation. After compiling an Information Collection Summary Report, our team made several presentations to work groups and the public about potential treatment options. Potential solutions include spreader berms, sediment basins, constructed treatment wetlands, and polishing ponds.
We continue to work closely with the SFWMD team to evaluate options and find the optimal solution to ultimately restore historical water flows while improving water quality in the area.
