PFAS Services at Former Wurtsmith Air Force Base
As part of an environmental services contract with the US Air Force, a site investigation was conducted at their former Wurtsmith base for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) based on regulatory interest, potential risk to human health and the environment, and evolving regulatory standards.
Our team conducted investigations at the Fire Training Area (FTA) and 24 non-FTA IRP sites. The objective was to assess the presence of PFAS in groundwater at the non-FTA sites, to delineate the groundwater concentrations above the EPA Provisional Health Advisories at Site FT-02 (FTA), and identify the presence and concentrations of PFAS in soil, sediment, sludge, seep, and surface water at Site FT-02. We used the results for a focused feasibility study (FFS) to assess remedial options for PFAS contamination at Site FT-02. A time-critical removal action (TCRA) memorandum was also prepared to intercept and remove petroleum hydrocarbons and PFAS dissolved in groundwater emanating from the area and an adjacent site.
Alternatives developed as part of the FFS focused on proven methods and explored the potential use of green and sustainable remediation techniques and in-situ chemical oxidation. An alternative was selected based on an optimal combination of cost, risk, effectiveness, ability to implement, and likelihood of achieving a response action outcome.
