Establishing a firm presence in the Bucks County area

The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) wanted a presence in the Bucks County area, a place where UPHS could see patients, but then refer them to their main facility at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania if necessary.

We held several half-day user programming meetings. With those, we developed an overall approach to the space that would accommodate the varied needs of two combined practices.

Our solution was a grand arrival point with registration, referrals, billing, administration, and a waiting area. A curved wood and glass wall directs patients to registration upon arrival. Once inside, patients are guided to one of the walk-up windows in the wood information wall or into the clinical area.

The clinical area is laid out with a floor pattern and accent walls that help direct patients to the nurses' stations, which are located at the intersections of corridors and feature higher lighting levels to further help with wayfinding.

Penn Medicine is welcoming, comfortable, and provides world-class medical care. Exactly what UPHS ordered.
