Open Road Cashless Tolling Facilities
Open Road Tolling (ORT) is a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas or tollbooths. It allows for free-flowing traffic at highway speeds, which reduces accidents and offers the convenience travelers expect and appreciate. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) reached out to our team to help implement this system at various locations.
We provided preliminary and final design as well as construction services for the implementation of multiple ORT facilities. We have delivered plans for roadway rehabilitation, signing and pavement marking, building and toll plaza demolition, and traffic control. Additionally, we have designed toll gantry structures and foundations as well as drainage improvements. Our other services include utility coordination, special provisions and construction cost estimates, final contract documents, and a construction schedule.
Four sites have been constructed to date—one along the existing Findlay Connector, two along the Southern Beltway near Pittsburgh, and one on the mainline at MP 31.4 near Warrendale. Nine other sites are in the final design or construction process.
