Northwell Health - Central Utility Plant
When Northwell Health was preparing plans for expanding its hospital in Manhasset, New York, they called on us to perform the pre-construction feasibility studies. After the evaluation, our team recommended that if Northwell was to move forward with expansion plans, they would need to make improvements to the hospital’s utility sources—and we would help with that as well.
The existing facility at Northwell Health provided 1,000,000 square feet of space for acute hospital care, and the expansion would add 250,000 square feet of new patient care space. To support the expansion, we developed a remote central utilities plant. This new facility incorporates the cogeneration of electrical power, steam, and chilled water, while saving the hospital millions of dollars in operating costs and reducing carbon emissions by 45 percent.
We managed the conceptual design, utility distribution, and preliminary permitting to help ensure that the new facility was operational in time to serve the planned expansion. The first phase of the central plant included roughly five megawatts of cogenerated power production, 100,000 pounds per hour of steam production, 4,000 tons of chilled water production, and will ultimately serve up to 2,000,000 square feet of hospital space.
