Middle Fork Beargrass Creek Stream Enhancement
Cherokee Park has a long history of providing a natural escape for Louisville residents. The Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek, which meanders through the park, suffers from poor water quality, bank erosion, and lack of habitat. As part of a consent decree, the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District was required to implement a stream restoration project to showcase the latest restoration techniques. With a reputation for being a leader in stream restoration, Stantec was selected to identify a site and implement the project.
We identified an ideal site to implement natural channel design techniques to enhance water quality and create habitat. Our team completed geomorphic assessments and conceptual and final designs, secured permits under an accelerated schedule, and provided construction observation and monitoring services.
The restoration realigned the channel to improve flow through a bridge, used vane structures to reduce erosion and promote deep pools, constructed riffles, and used toe wood and soil bioengineering techniques. The result—a sustainable solution to a degraded stream.
