Logan International Airport - Runway End 33L Safety Area Improvements
Our services during design and construction helped maximize airport safety in a very limited space, with a tight schedule and a mandate to minimize environmental impacts. To do this, the runway safety area integrated an engineered materials arresting system constructed on an end bearing, pile supported precast concrete deck extending into Boston Harbor. This allowed for continued full use of Logan’s primary east-west runway, utilized for the heaviest aircraft and wide-body international flights.
During design, we established dimensional and loading requirements of the elevated concrete deck, identified airfield civil design criteria, and established airfield and NAVAID electrical lighting design requirements. During construction, we oversaw construction and coordinated airfield operations and phasing. Our resident engineer also provided close coordination between the contractor, Massport and the Federal Aviation Administration, ensuring that the project focused on airport safety while minimizing operational impacts.
