John E. Amos Pond Closure
The coal-fired power generating industry has faced significant challenges. Aging infrastructure and increased federal regulations have provided the impetus for electric utilities to—among other things—decommission legacy facilities in an environmentally responsible manner.
American Electric Power (AEP) is a leader in this movement, and we got to play a key role. At the John E. Amos Power Plant, we helped AEP develop an innovative design that would cover, close, and restore the existing 170-acre ash pond. Our unique approach, utilizing dredging and concave contouring, reduced closure time and costs to rate payers.
After the closure, a series of channels drained the former pond site, connecting to an existing stream and returning the site to a more naturalized setting.
