I-26 and Volvo Interchange - Justification Report and Preliminary Design

Bringing a bit of Sweden to the United States, Volvo opened a vehicle manufacturing plant capable of producing up to 100,000 cars every year in South Carolina. To accommodate the massive operation and to be ready by the time the facility opened, big roadway changes were needed. The I-26 and Volvo interchange required rapid completion—so the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) engaged our help to deliver an enhanced transportation network.

In our role as a sub-consultant for the new interchange along I- 26 at MM189 in Berkeley County, we developed the preliminary bridge design, preliminary roadway design, traffic analysis, and environmental permitting. Planning for and designing bridges appropriate for an area at high risk of earthquakes was incredibly important for this project. We provided conceptual plan development, traffic analyses, and traffic modeling. By quickly producing an interchange justification report (IJR) to support the design-build project procurement, we helped the project to be completed before plant production reached high gear.

Not only will the new interchange help support Volvo’s first car factory in North America, but it provides access for many Volvo-related suppliers and manufacturers—accommodating and directing the increased traffic.
