Green Roof for Con Edison's Learning Center

We worked with Con Edison to design the green roof as outdoor laboratory for environmental research. The Green Roof, which is home to 21,000 plants on a quarter acre of the learning center, retains 30 percent of the rainwater that falls on it. The plants then release the water as vapor. Research has shown that green roofs like the one atop the Con Edison building can be a cost-effective way to keep water from running into sewer systems and causing overflows.

The green roof is visible from the adjacent second and third floor offices and training rooms of this facility, bringing the feeling of the outdoors inside. It is designed with 2 foot by 4 foot by 4 inch GreenGrid® modular planting trays that were pre-planted with a variety of sedums, and installed on site once the new roofing was in place.

Our structural engineers reviewed the existing roof framing for its ability to support the additional loads generated by the new green roof construction. Our landscape architects reviewed the plant selections and layout for their suitability for the green roof application.
