Everett Transportation and Development Plan
In 2019, the former Wynn Resorts opened a casino in Everett, Massachusetts while approximately 1,000 new housing units also opened citywide with more on the way. As one of the densest towns in the Boston metro area changed shape, it became clear that transportation improvements were necessary to keep pace.
Through an innovative demonstration project, we helped the mayor implement a dedicated bus lane that carries approximately 10,000 riders in place of a mile of curbside parking. The mayor then led the Everett Transportation and Development Plan to rethink how access to parking, transit, walking, and biking facilities can provide better mobility. We created a framework for multimodal, transit-oriented, and realistic growth that increases the supply and diversity of housing and creates affordable housing choices and livable places. This included strategies like the establishment of Transit Main Streets, preparing for the extension of Boston's BRT-like Silver Line service, and providing tools to establish a Transportation Management Association. We also suggested smaller changes such as creating local neighborways for bicycle access and targeting walking improvements to extend transit reach.
Our work is demonstrating how balanced infrastructure investments and space between personal cars and other modes creates a more level playing field, ultimately creating a wider and more equitable range of transportation choices.
