Plymouth Coach Station

Development of a new coach station in the city centre

Combining the skills of our experienced bus planners and civil engineers

To enable the redevelopment of Bretonside for the major Drake Circus Leisure project, Plymouth needed a new coach station. We recognised that while the original proposed build site on a car park was well located and very accessible by coaches and users, the space available to build it on was highly constrained.

Rethinking the operational model for frequent long-distance services, plus offering the front and back of house activities that are needed, we had to combine the skills of our experienced bus planners and civil engineers. By taking over and repurposing an existing retail unit for the passengers waiting areas, we created a direct access to the city’s retail heart and tourist attractions.

National intercity services are provided by Megabus and National Express, who also operate the coach station on behalf of the City Council. Our bus operations consultants provided scheduling advice, design support and costing estimates to support the architects and engineering teams. Our civil engineering teams in Reading and Taunton took the plans through to construction and operation.

The entire site is also surrounded by extensive landscaping and trees which dramatically improve the look and feel, ultimately providing a welcoming sense of arrival to those entering Plymouth by bus.
