Penhale Dunes
Becoming surplus to Ministry of Defence needs in 2005, Penhale Training Camp on the north Cornwall Coast was a site ready for reinvention. When Comparo Ltd. Wanted to build a new, local Cornish community there, we were instructed to secure a meaningful and viable planning permission.
The 150-dwelling, mixed-use scheme took its cues from Cornish fishing villages by bringing development into a compact form within the valley landscape to shelter inhabitants from the Celtic Sea weather. This allowed the transformation of the wider scarred landscape through the removal of dispersed buildings across the headland and the introduction of new recreational and biodiverse habitats that will support traditional Cornish farming practices.
The local community and stakeholders sat at the centre of the project’s development. Each stage of the scheme’s evolution was discussed and considered in detail by the Parish Councils. We managed the client responses to Natural England, The Environment Agency, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, RSPB, and National Trust and sought out solution to several complex, competing needs.
With unanimous support from Cornwall Council, we are now assisting Comparo with the task of preparing the site for delivery. After almost 70 years of military occupation, this site is now being reinvented as part of North Cornwall’s costal community.
