Estí Hydroelectric Project
By the 1990s it was clear that Panama’s need for clean power was growing to become essential. The exceptionally large urban community accounted for three quarters of the country’s total population and abusing fossil fuels for energy was no longer a sustainable option. AES would begin the Estí Hydroelectric project in 1999 and asked our team to implement an efficient and cost-effective strategy.
Our team supplied AES with the engineering expertise necessary for a 120 MW Estí Hydroelectric Project. We needed to present AES’s technical requirements in a way that could be fully understood and implemented by contractors to complete the project on time and within the contract cost.
Located 400KM west of Panama City, Estí Hydroelectric uses excess outflows from the existing Chiriquí and Fortuna projects, as well as the natural flow from two other rivers. Four intervening flows coincide at Estí to produce 120 MW of electricity in the Canjilones power station.
The project includes two dams. The first is on the Chiriquí River and is 35.5-meter-high and 213m long and the second dam is 60m high on the Barringón River. Our team successfully implemented an alternative strategy to replace fossil fuels in a nation that was desperately in need of a healthy energy source.
