Antamina Mine Waste Management and Expansion Support

Operating in Ancash since 2001, the Antamina polymetallic copper mine is second in Peru and in the top three of copper producers worldwide. It also serves as major employer and source of economic development for the surrounding community. Located an average of 4,300 metres (14,108 feet) above sea level in the Andes, Antamina has a complex geological environment. This adds an extra level of challenge to any operations on the site due to variations inherent in the local geology, requiring careful and responsive planning.

A major constraint to mine expansion is waste management, primarily where and how to store tailings and waste rock safely and economically. For this reason and looking to extend the useful life of Antamina for another 25-plus years, Compañía Minera Antamina engaged our team to carry out essential projects to expand the mine’s dumps and tailings.

As a consistent partner in Antamina's journey over the years, we’ve been actively involved in various aspects of the mine's operations. Most recently, these contributions have included tailings dam design and safety reviews, waste storage facility designs, and environmental permitting. These projects will support continued mining operations through 2036 and then through 2049.

The plan to maintain the continuity of mining operation at Antamina will help preserve numerous direct and indirect jobs, contributing to local and regional economic stability. Additionally, Compañía Minera Antamina’s efforts will foster economic development through investment in infrastructure and the improvement of community services.
