Translational Research Image Guided Operating Room A
At Toronto General Hospital, the operating room of tomorrow is a reality. We renovated Operating Room 20 into a Translational Research Image Guided Operating Room (TRIGOR A) for bio-sciences research.
The new research operating suite is three times larger than a standard operating room in most modern hospitals. The large space was required for the multi-modality image-guidance system. The system features a multi-detector Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, a C-arm for cone-beam CT / fluoroscopy, high-performance ultrasound, fluorescence imaging, and optical tracking systems to capture tumors, and other surgical targets with unmatched precision.
Integration with systems for image registration, deformable modeling, and fusion with radiotherapy planning offers an environment for designing and testing new equipment and innovative multi-modality therapeutics.
Our biggest challenge was completing the renovation within a fully functioning surgical suite, with minimal disruptions to the existing department and adherence to Canadian Standards Association standards and the University Health Network’s own infection control standards.
