The Ring at Esplanade Place Ville Marie - Electromechanical Design

Ivanhoe Cambridge, the owner of Place Ville Marie (PVM), wanted to mark the completion of Esplanade PVM's renovation with a monumental work of art. The Ring, designed by landscape architect Claude Cormier, would be suspended over the Esplanade. Ivanhoe Cambridge engaged our electromechanical designers to assist with the installation of the 30-metre (98-foot), 23-ton round structure.

We developed an interior layout for the cylinder with components to illuminate the structure at night and a heating system to prevent snow and ice accumulation during the winter. Additionally, we needed to design these elements in such a way that it could be integrated directly on site. Our team also provided input to The Ring’s designers to include access hatches that would allow for annual maintenance of the cables housed in the armature.

Inaugurated to mark the 60th anniversary of Place Ville Marie, The Ring overhanging Esplanade PVM is a beacon to Montreal’s city center, day and night, in any season.
