South Light Rail Transit Extension
As a longtime member of the Edmonton community, we have a personal stake in the success of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, which we brought to bear on the South LRT extension. As the managing consultant for the project, we led a large team responsible for the development of eight kilometers of track with a variety of coordinated elements. Designed through shared urban corridors, the project entailed five new stations, maintenance facility additions, and 300 meters of twin tunnels beneath prominent historical buildings in non-conducive tunneling geology. Given the complexity of the project, we paid close attention to identifying, mitigating, and monitoring risk issues.
We also worked closely with the community to keep them informed and involved. The extension serves the needs of a growing Edmonton community that is shifting from single passenger automobiles to rapid and efficient mass public transit. A highly used public transportation system creates connections between Edmonton’s various and diverse communities which, in turn, strengthen the cultural fabric of the city as a whole.
