Metro Line LRT
The expansion of Edmonton’s LRT system is among the City of Edmonton’s top priorities and part of a broader initiative to improve the city’s public transit. The most recent addition—a 3.3 kilometre extension from Churchill Station to NAIT—creates a critical connection between NAIT, MacEwan University, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Kingsway Mall, the municipal airport redevelopment, and the downtown core.
Through the buildings’ material selection, the Metro Line is distinctive while still providing a unique identity for each station. To complement the steel, glass, and concrete, wood was used to showcase the beams and roof deck, adding warmth and softness while promoting sustainable architecture. Designing with structural wood meant that there was no place to stash the buildings’ services. Platform clearance constraints meant there could be no columns along the edge of the roof. Special attention to coordination and detailing kept the roof clean of services and sleek in design.
With MacEwan station designed as a ‘park in the city’ and Kingsway station as a ‘landmark,’ the overarching theme is the experience of movement. Through the dynamic roof structures, glazing, and material patterns, the public can experience this ‘movement’ as they travel through the city.
