MAX Yellow Bus Rapid Transitway (BRT)

With overcrowding on the City of Calgary’s Red Line LRT, the City needed to provide alternative time-competitive transportation options for communities southwest of the city. Our contribution? Conducting a review of the previous functional study alignment and providing functional design and public engagement services.

Our southwest BRT route design encompassed approximately 22 kilometres and follows several busy roads. The plan minimized impacts to existing infrastructure near the right of way and neighboring communities while maintaining safe driving conditions, and we recommended two dedicated transitway lanes along the west side of 14 Street that create free movement of transit vehicles. At 90 Avenue, where the dual eastbound left turn lane had recently been expanded to a triple left turn lane, we proposed an underpass to separate the bus movements from vehicular traffic.

Our design along Glenmore Trail allows for eastbound peak hour use of the shoulder between Crowchild Trail and 14 Street. The route moves through Mount Royal University and the high-density neighborhood of Currie Barracks before continuing up the existing bus-only lanes along Crowchild Trail and connecting to the downtown in mixed traffic.

With a strategic combination of mixed traffic, dedicated transitway lanes, and bus-only shoulder lane operations, the Southwest Transitway will provide a simple, timely, mass transit option from southwest Calgary to the downtown core.
