Highway 401/409 Rail Tunnel

With over 20 kilometers of rail corridor, the Georgetown South project is one of the largest rail transit infrastructure expansions in North America. It’s part of Metrolinx’s $50 billion regional transportation plan that’s designed to enhance public transportation for Ontario residents. And part of the project entails the Kitchener Railway Tunnel development under Highway 401—the busiest highway in Toronto.

At $200 million, the Kitchener Railway Tunnel provides a fourth set of tracks for Metrolinx and lies right beneath Highways 401 and 409. As those roads are Class 1 highways, open cut construction could not be used. Which meant, our team had to review micro-tunneling technologies.

We provided preliminary and detailed-design services, and investigates track design, grading, drainage, and retaining walls. The project also included developing the conceptual design for the reconstruction of the Etobicoke North GO station.

The project also accommodates the Union Pearson Express and promotes a connection between Canada's two busiest transportation hubs: Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport.
