Kanata North Autonomous Vehicle Transit Network Feasibility Study
Kanata North Business Association (KNBA) has a bold vision to transform their Kanata North Special Economic District (KNSED) into a live-work-play community. This aligns with the City of Ottawa’s emerging policy to create 15-minute neighbourhoods in which residents can access goods and services without using private automobiles.
Stantec, including our autonomy-focused team, GenerationAV™, partnered with a team of external subject matter experts to conduct a feasibility study for the KNBA’s proposed autonomous vehicle transit network (AVTN). We led the AV network analysis and planning and, within the study, we establish design and mobility considerations and evaluation criteria for the AVTN based on study objectives and area transportation needs. We also evaluate several types of AV technology and provide contextually suitable AV recommendations. The study explains implementation considerations for the AVTN under a proposed 2025 time horizon, as well as under an accelerated investments time horizon beyond 2025.
This study is viewed as the next step in advancing specific aspects of previous transportation planning work, with a focus on showcasing and implementing AV technology as a complement to conventional transit technology.
