Isle Maligne Roundabout
To reduce traffic in the residential areas of Isle-Maligne and Delisle in Alma, the ministère des Transports du Québec (the Quebec Ministry of Transportation) undertook a major bypass project that included building a new stretch of Highway 169 and two new roundabouts. For the new roundabout at the Rue Sainte-Cécile intersection in Alma, we handled the conceptual study, preliminary design, plans and specifications, contract management, an impact assessment, and a presentation to area residents.
The roundabout project involved a number of complexities—since many oversized trucks use the road, our team came up with a tailored design, developed using AutoTURN® to produce traffic simulations. With the comfort of residents and of the neighbouring districts in mind, we carried out an acoustic study to allow for installation of noise barriers, and we also included a multi-purpose walkway over the bypass road which allows pedestrians, cyclists, and snowmobilers to cross the road more safely. During the presentation to area residents, our team showed a 3D video with a 360° view to allow residents to visualize the concept.
The new roundabouts and section of highway have improved traffic flow in the area and allowed residents to enjoy peace and quiet once again.
