Institut national d’agriculture biologique, Cégep de Victoriaville

In light of the increased demand for organic farming, the Cégep de Victoriaville wanted to increase its intake capacity for its organic agricultural techniques program. In 2016, therefore, Stantec began an engineering project to build the Institut national d’agriculture biologique (INAB), the largest organic agriculture training and research centre in Canada.

Given the institute's ecological focus, the building had to embody the values of innovation, sustainability and environmental protection inherent in the institute's educational and research mission. The selection of wood as the primary material in the building structure was natural, judicious and innovative. In addition, to reflect the agricultural function of the complex, the building design included a tower of wood reminiscent of a grain silo. This distinctive feature contributed greatly to the unique visual stamp put on the building, but it presented complex challenges for our design team.

Since its construction, the Cégep de Victoriaville has taken in 30% more students to its agricultural techniques program. The 4,400 m2 complex has 10 times more space and offers students state-of-the-art facilities, all in a building with a reduced carbon footprint.
