Eliminating safety hazards as Finning expands

To keep pace with the growing demand for mining equipment support, we helped Finning with the design of a 16-bay service support facility in the Caribou Energy Park in Fort McKay. This over 18,500-square-metre, $100 million facility supports the maintenance and repair of heavy mining equipment.

Before a large piece of mining equipment can be brought into the facility for repair or maintenance, it must first be washed to remove any debris that could cause a safety hazard. We designed a wash bay system consisting of 14 water cannons surrounding the mining trucks on three levels – eight on the main level, four on the lower mezzanine, and two on the upper mezzanine. The water used is treated and recycled through an elaborate system to achieve recycling rates of over 95 percent. Also, the raw process water system is supplemented with rain water captured from the roof of the building.

This project is the largest capital investment that Finning has completed in its corporate history.
