Providing preliminary design for the realignment of the Gardiner Expressway East from Cherry Street to Don Valley Parkway

F.G. Gardiner Expressway Section 5 Preliminary Design

With a population of more than 6.5 million and counting, the Greater Toronto Area sees a lot of traffic. That means addressing the growing needs of drivers in the City of Toronto to help them get where they’re going safely on city roadways. Looking to address aging infrastructure along the F.G Gardiner Expressway, the City developed a large, multiyear strategic rehabilitation program. They engaged us to help.

We provided preliminary design for the replacement of the Gardiner Expressway East from Cherry Street to Don Valley Parkway, as well as the Lake Shore Boulevard East reconfiguration. Our design for this section—one of six sections needing rehabilitating—includes 36 mainline spans from Cherry Street to the Don Valley Parkway on and off ramps, 18 spans of Don Valley Parkway ramps, and 20 spans from the Don Valley Parkway ramps to the Logan ramps connecting to Lake Shore Boulevard. Additionally, we completed the interim detailed design portion of this assignment to assess the condition, provide rehabilitation recommendations, complete detailed design, and prepare contract documentation for interim repairs. These efforts will help extend the life span of the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway East from Cherry Street to Don Valley Parkway for ten years.

Given the high volume of traffic and importance of this section of the F.G. Gardiner Expressway, this project represents one of the most high-profile and complex projects for the City of Toronto—and a win for drivers.
