Boosting non-aeronautical revenue for the Edmonton Airport

It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the Edmonton International Airport to the center of the city. The first 20 minutes takes arriving passengers through a typical prairie landscape of long evening shadows reaching far into the distance. But only minutes from an airport expecting to host 9 million passengers annually by 2020, the Edmonton International Airport Authority (EIA) saw potential on the horizon.

EIA asked Stantec to provide a development strategy for the highway commercial lands leading to and from the airport, in order to boost non-aeronautical revenues for the Authority. Our team prepared a staged and flexible development program and phasing strategy that outlined land use patterns, circulation networks, and servicing and open space concepts, all in enough detail to guide development toward EIA’s vision. We also prepared an Integrated Water Management Plan that would help our client decide whether to include on site wastewater treatment in their plan.

Two years after Stantec submitted the strategy, enough of the initial infrastructure is now complete that part of the commercial development will be built in the next couple of years. Once only a distant point on that prairie horizon, EIA’s vision is becoming reality.
