Coxs River Biological Monitoring Program

Mount Piper and Wallerawang Power Stations discharge cooling water into the Coxs River system. Over the last 15 years, we’ve supported our client with the Coxs River Biological Monitoring Program (BMP). As required by the client’s water access license, the BMP monitors river health indicators to assess the impact of environmental flow releases.

As part of the BMP, our team assesses impacts on aquatic and riparian habitats and vegetation. We analyze long-term biological data sets to track the nature, extent, and magnitude of any potential changes to water quality, fish biodiversity, periphyton (a complex growth of plants, algae, and fungi on submerged surfaces in freshwater), and macroinvertebrates (larval stages of insects that need freshwater ecosystems). This data is then used to inform management of this high value aquatic ecosystem.

The program requires extensive consultation with government regulatory agencies and the production of high-quality annual technical reports.
