Cassowary Coast Regional Council Culvert Engineering Consulting

Improving culverts along critical coastal roadways

Protecting transportation corridors against future extreme weather

South of Cairns, the Cassowary Coast is famous for its tropical lifestyle surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest areas and beautiful beaches. It can be paradise, but it also experiences wild weather patterns such as tropical cyclones and faces the regular possibility of flash flooding. Severe storms make maintaining culverts vital to keeping transportation corridors remain open, even in extreme weather conditions.

When the Cassowary Coast Regional Council decided it was time to replace some local culverts, which were at the end of their useful life, they turned to our local Cairns team to help. We acted as the consulting engineers to improve the resilience of the culvert crossings and enhance the road geometry where possible.

We undertook site inspections to develop a detailed understanding of the constraints on site. This included investigating the location of existing services and critical site features to improve the design and prevent service clashes during construction. Throughout the project, we maintained a high level of communication with the Council, flagging issues early to avoid surprises and delivering practical and pragmatic solutions to overcome site challenges.

Due to the Council’s dedication and efforts, key roads along the Cassowary Coast will be protected for years to come.
