Dr. (Uthaya) M. Uthayakumar is a senior principal engineer with a wide range of design and construction experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering for bridges, highways, rapid transit projects, high-rise buildings, water reservoirs, and water-front structures. He specializes in soft soils engineering, pile foundations, and geotechnical earthquake engineering.
Since 2022, Uthaya has been working as the owner’s lead geotechnical engineer for the Cariboo Roads Recovery Projects that involve designing and building transportation infrastructure damaged by landslides. Assessing, designing, and building resilient infrastructure with consideration of the changing climate and weather patterns are a big part of these projects.
When he isn’t working on transportation infrastructure projects, Uthaya is active in the geotechnical engineering community. He serves as the Vancouver regional director for the Canadian Geotechnical Society and chairman for the Vancouver Geotechnical Society. He’s also served as a committee member for the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s conferences, the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, and the British Columbia supplement to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
