Helping design a luxury hotel on Tasmania’s east coast

Aptly named the “Jewel of Tasmania”, Saffire Freycinet, located in Coles Bay, is a boutique hotel resort.

Designed by renowned local Tasmanian architects, Morris Nunn and Associates (now Circa Morris-Nunn Chua Architects), the development consists of 20 suites and a unique main building. Stantec provide the mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, fire protection and sustainability services on the project. Facing south over Great Oyster Bay, the buildings had their challenges in meeting sustainability aspirations, but maintained curtain glazing to take full advantage of the views. The distinctive architecture also created several challenges for the engineering design, resulting in the need for innovative and creative solutions—for example, all the ventilation intakes and exhausts are fully concealed, with nothing penetrating the roof of the main building. The curved roof enabled us to take advantage of the natural stratification of air and redistribute it to save energy. The hotel also includes a water catchment dam and dedicated wastewater treatment plant to reduce the environmental impact of the development and to work within the constraints of the existing infrastructure in its remote location.

Now complete, this luxury hotel showcases the best of Tasmania’s east coast.
