Mortdale Railway Maintenance Centre

Trains are critical infrastructure. Nothing can move as much freight, or as many people, as efficiently over land as a train. So, it’s important that service and maintenance facilities for trains are equipped to keep them rolling safely and reliably.

When the Mortdale Maintenance Centre in Sydney required upgrades, we were engaged by Transport for New South Wales to provide survey and civil engineering support. The upgrades included extension of the existing driveway entrance for heavy trucks, installation of a new electrical substation, civil engineering for track modification, drainage upgrades, new retaining walls, and lighting.

Other major structural activities include two new underground structures that will facilitate the transfer of train bogies between the maintenance centre buildings. Track work set-out was also conducted within the existing maintenance centre to upgrade one of the maintenance tracks and install new train-stops and buffer-stops. As well as the technical challenges, a day-to-day challenge is being able to conduct works safely around operational activities within a live train maintenance centre. With maintenance facility upgrading, train users can expect continued reliability as ridership increases with population growth.
