A year-round pool with a reasonable carbon footprint

The Fremantle Aquatic Centre heating project is the first in Australia to utilise cutting-edge renewable technology and combine a 75 kilowatt cogeneration system with a ground source heat pump geothermal bore system to warm the pool. The retrofit solution to the 50-year-old project represents the City of Fremantle’s push towards a reduced carbon footprint while providing the community with an all year-round facility.

We were engaged by Energy Made Clean to assist with the preliminary design and electrical infrastructure upgrade to accommodate the cogeneration plant. The City of Fremantle appointed Evo Industries Australia to undertake design refinement and construction. Stantec was retained to provide specialist knowledge in parallel power generation and to assist with the protection design and authority approvals.

The new pool heating system has been assessed as providing optimal payback and carbon offset to the City of Fremantle via pool heating efficiency and reduced operational costs. The amenities? A playground pool, swimming lanes, and a program pool fit for walking and rehabilitation services for community visitors.
