Brisbane South State Secondary College
Over the last 10 years, around 5,000 additional students have joined Queensland state schools in and around the Brisbane central business district. This growth is set to continue with more than 3,000 additional students expected within the next five years. The solution? The new Brisbane South State Secondary College.
The school master plan covers six main elements (hubs for creativity, learning, health and wellbeing, sports, and administration) and focuses on providing flexible learning spaces and well-developed performance-based amenities. We provided multi-service mechanical, electrical, acoustics, and hydraulic engineering. The biggest challenge was the disposition of lots and features, particularly in the electrical design as the supply authority had to reconfigure their existing infrastructure to accommodate.
The BSSSC—along with its impressive green space addition—will increase state secondary schooling capacity, supporting strong and sustained population growth in inner Brisbane. Plus, the auditoriums and performance halls will be used as rental resources for the community. New facilities will be staged each year going forward, until 2026 when the full school will offer education for students in years 7 to 12.
