Stantec as part of Water2Wire JV to deliver Borumba upper and lower dams

Creating long duration energy storage to bolster Queensland’s transition to renewable energy

09/17/2024 QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, together with GHD and Mott MacDonald as part of the Water2Wire Joint Venture (JV), has been appointed by Queensland Hydro as the Dams Designer for the Upper Dams and Lower Dam of Borumba Pumped Hydro Project.

In selecting this JV, Queensland Hydro gains a united delivery partner that draws together world class capability and capacity to deliver a 2,000 MW pumped hydro energy storage system at Lake Borumba located near Gympie in southeast Queensland.

The project will see a new upper reservoir built, as well as a new dam wall to replace the existing Borumba Dam wall and increase Lake Borumba’s storage capacity from 46 to 224 gigalitres. The result will have the capacity to generate up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity for up to 24 hours at a time.

“We’re honoured to bring decades of experience in dams and hydropower to the Water2Wire Joint Venture and play our part in Queensland’s goal to transition to 80% renewable energy by 2035.” said Mark Cordell, Water2Wire Design Director, and Market Leader, Dams and Hydropower, Stantec.

“Our deep understanding of the complexities involved in dams and pumped hydro projects of this scale ready us to deliver a secure and reliable energy storage solution for Queensland communities.”

Stantec has nearly 100 years of dams and hydropower experience including feasibility studies, detailed design and construction management from more than 5,000 dam projects around the world. The Stantec dam team has delivered the concept design for the Warragamba Dam Raise and the reference design for the Somerset Dam Improvement Project in Australia, as well as the San Vicente Dam Raise project, the largest concrete dam raise in the US, and the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project in Colorado, US.
