Sustainability has been an important consideration in the design of Cornerstone
Elekta (a global pioneer in the treatment of cancers, whose oncology products are designed and primarily built in Crawley) and Crawley Borough Council had aspirations for the site of Elekta’s new radiotherapy facility. Their goal? Sustainability at the forefront.
Sustainable design choices include careful modelling and the integration of shading devices into the architectural aesthetic to mitigate solar gain, centrally-controlled LED lighting throughout the building, and electric car charging points adjacent to priority parking spaces. Provisions have also been made for future connection to the Manor Royal district heating network. Shower, changing, and clothes drying facilities are provided to encourage building users to cycle to the site, and the building boundary condition incorporating an extension to the exiting Manor Royal cycle network.
Whilst a BREEAM rating wasn’t a planning requirement, the assessment of the building’s performance was benchmarked against the BREEAM criteria and an assessor was appointed to develop the strategy and run the workshops. The building was certified at the post construction stage as BREEAM very good, and it achieved an EPC performance rating of B.
