The first annual Girls Empowerment Summit supports gender equality in the transportation industry.
Engaging with the communities we live and work in is important to Stantec. Supporting our clients in their local community initiatives not only shows that we care about the work we’re doing, but also about the people. The Los Angeles Metro (LA Metro) has been a long-time client of Stantec, and in March of this year, they hosted a Girls Empowerment Summit for more than 250 middle and high school students interested in transportation careers. Our local team came out to support the summit with a hands-on workshop.
2019 marks the first year for the event. Girls from grades 6-12 come to the summit to listen to speakers and participate in workshops hosted by professionals from organizations throughout the transportation industry. The goal? Shedding a light on the benefits of having women in transportation by inspiring young girls to think about joining the profession.
For the summit, Stantec employees hosted a hands-on workshop for the students called “Designing a Future: Transit Station Design.” The session provided students with insight on what goes on in designing a large-scale transit station. “Our goal was to show young girls that they can make a difference in any industry, but particularly in transportation,” said Tina Moschetti, Senior Principal and Managing Leader in our Van Nuys, California office. Tina was one of the Stantec workshop leaders at the summit. “A career in transportation is an opportunity to positively impact communities—locally and globally. It was a great session with lots of discussion, questions, and interests peaked,” Tina said.
“I believe we planted some seeds at the summit, and I hope to see some of these young women join the Stantec team in the future.” Tina said.
We’re excited about the future of transportation. By focusing on equity and inclusion, we have the opportunity to invite a full spectrum of talent into the organization.
