Watt Power Development Consent Orders

Fast work for heavy power projects

During peak power demand times, these two plants can help their communities keep the lights on

As lead planning consultant for Watt Power, we completed and submitted two development consent order (DCO) applications for Progress Power Station and Hirwaun Power Station as nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs)—projects that bypass normal local planning requirements. We managed the examination process for both projects, and both applications were approved.

Receiving the DCOs marks an important milestone for Watt Power’s first gas-fired power station projects. Subject to the outcome of the capacity mechanism auction, this agreement would have the two stations operating with a generating capacity of up to 299 MW during peak demand times when renewable generation is intermittent. That means maintaining sufficient power for the community while still supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

We have now advised on or contributed to the DCO applications for over twenty notified or consented NSIPs, providing a range of technical and strategic advice including DCO management, planning, environmental impact assessment, transport assessment, construction logistics, and engineering design.
