Crawley Sewage Treatment Works Advanced Digestion
A regional sludge center, the Crawley Sewage Treatment Works facility called upon our team to lead the design of a new advanced digestion treatment stream. The project—owned and managed by Thames Water—focused on upgrading, refurbishing, replacing, and modifying the existing facility.
Installing new thermal hydrolysis processing (THP) into an existing digestion facility presents numerous design, system integration, and construction challenges. Early in the design stage, our team switched from a Cambi B6-2 to a B6-3 unit to smooth out the steam profile. This allowed for more heat recovery from existing combined heat and power (CHP) units and a higher throughput of 40 dry tonnes per day (dtpd)—now treating 12,600 tonnes of dry solids per year.
This project was one of the first to truly embrace the design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) fabrication mentality in the United Kingdom, revolutionising delivery of THP plants. Successful DfMA required significant input from our team in helping the supply chain design several containerised packages—minimising onsite construction and commissioning time. Following this example, it’s now possible to deliver THP plants for a lower capex, in shorter time spans, with higher quality.
