Sutton Harbour, Plymouth

When Sutton Harbour Holdings wanted to estimate the value of its current activities and identify the wider economic benefits the city of Plymouth could enjoy from the regeneration of its historic harbour, our economists stepped in to support with a value-based analysis.

We were also commissioned to develop economic benefits and planning statements in support of a planning application for the Boardwalk project, a scheme aimed at providing retail and restaurant space on a boardwalk over the water adjacent to the Barbican Conservation Area. In reviewing the application, the city council deemed that any harm to heritage assets was less than substantial and outweighed by the wider public benefits that the scheme would deliver.

More recently, Sutton Harbour Holdings commissioned us to assess the economic value of Plymouth Fisheries (envisaged to become a restaurant-led tourist destination similar to Australia’s famous Sydney Fish Market), Sutton Harbour Marina, and maritime-based events to the city of Plymouth. The study was informed by numerous interviews and surveys with businesses based around the harbour, and the results were widely publicised in the local press and at a business conference.

Thanks in part to our research and analysis, Sutton Harbour will soon have a whole new look and feel, reenergizing this important community hub.
