Design and construction project management through delivery of three new landfill cells and five capping restoration projects

Working on behalf of recycling, resource and waste management company, Viridor, our team provided both engineering and project management services at two of their landfills in the south west of England.

Walpole Landfill, located in Somerset, is in an area of flat low-lying alluvial deposits that create challenging ground conditions associated with high groundwater and very soft compressible strata. We provided design, procurement, site management and contract administration through construction of three new landfill cells and restoration projects. Our work included innovative design of a 1.5 kilometre haul road using recycled tires that provided a flexible road base allowing the road to be raised above surrounding ground levels that commonly flooded.

The second site, Heathfield Landfill, located in Devon, was operated as a disposal facility for commercial and domestic waste since 1980. With Viridor’s new Energy from Waste facilities operational, the landfill operations ceased in 2016. We provided design and contract administration through the capping and restoration of the last landfill cells with completion of site grading, installation of landfill gas and leachate extraction systems, construction of drainage infrastructure and completion of landscaping.

In total, we have designed and managed the construction of three new landfill cells and delivered five capping projects, delivering £3.3 million of construction works totaling circa 40,000 square metres of new basal cell and 70,000m2 of permanent capping and landscape restoration.
