Inclusive Hotel Design

Environment and product designs should meet the needs of everyone or as many people as possible, rather than those of the average fit, and recognise that some specific group needs may conflict with others. But design for all does not need to mean compromise on aesthetics or quality of finish.

These design principles were adopted for a hotel development in London. Our Equalities team reviewed inclusive design proposals for the hotel. We delivered a policy review and input to the design and access statement, setting out how the site would be accessible, its wayfinding approach, and an extensive table detailing inclusive design requirements.

Our input included specific widths and dimensions required for physical accessibility of wheelchairs, shared surfacing, accessible hotel bedroom furniture, and bathroom design. Hearing loops in communal areas, maps for all visitors, training of staff, and booking processes were also included. With our recommendations, the hotel development can be fully inclusive and assessable for all guests, visitors, and employees.
