Cairngorms National Park Authority - Active Communities

As part of the Heritage Horizons - Cairngorms 2030 programme, the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) wanted to increase the park’s capacity for more sustainable ways of moving around including encouraging use of active travel options. CNPA reached out to us to study options focussed around Aviemore, the largest settlement in the park, and five communities within the Badenoch and Strathspey area.

For this study, we considered active travel provision, streetscape, and placemaking improvement works that would support people-first infrastructure. This would include a safe, attractive, and direct cycle network as a flagship project for Active Communities, which aims to apply the 20-Minute Neighbourhood concept to a semi-rural environment where people can meet their everyday needs via a short walk or cycle ride. We conducted extensive community engagement and collaborative exercises to facilitate understanding of the role active travel and outdoor public places play in support of people who can and want to live well locally.

Now that the project has completed Stages 1 and 2 requirements under Sustrans’ Places for Everyone fund, CNPA will pursue funding to progress the work into Stages 3 and 4 to develop detailed and technical designs. Due to the geographical extent and ambition of the proposal, the project will be delivered in phases.
