A high collision rate solved in a roundabout way

Wachesaw Road and Old Kings Highway

An above average collision rate at the intersection of Wachesaw Road and Old Kings Highway was of great concern to South Carolina Department of Transportation. Their first priority was to improve safety and efficiency of the intersection for South Carolina motorists.

We began the project by reviewing the crash history and identifying crash patterns at the intersection. We then performed a field investigation of the intersection to identify existing conditions that could be contributing to the above average crash rate. After performing a traffic analysis using existing turning movement traffic volumes as well as projected future traffic volumes based on historical growth in the area, we developed a concept for improvements to the intersection. The selected concept was to construct a single lane roundabout at the intersection to reduce conflict points from turning vehicles.

Updated pavement markings and signage, combined with improved intersection geometry, will ensure greatly a greatly reduced number of collisions at this intersection for years to come.
