University of Wisconsin Oshkosh - Sage Hall

We collaborated with Berners-Schober Associates Inc. to program and design Sage Hall, a new home for the administration, classrooms, research labs, and faculty offices of the UW Oshkosh College of Business, as well as several departments of the College of Letters and Science, including geography, history, journalism, sociology, and political science.

Our team was challenged with providing a progressive learning environment to be shared by several disciplines that would also achieve an aggressive low energy-use standard mandated by the governor of Wisconsin. This 190,000-square-foot masonry building is the first new academic building constructed on the Oshkosh campus since the 1970s. It facilitates formal academic instruction, informal experiential learning, and social interaction among students and faculty.

The solution organizes the space program around an open-air landscaped light court to harvest daylight. Sage Hall’s other sustainable features include rain gardens, radiant floor heating, a vegetated roof, and solar panels.  This integrated sustainable design met the governor’s challenge and was certified LEED Gold by the USGBC.
